The Best Medicine

Did you know that laughter boosts the immune system, triggers the release of endorphins (feel good chemicals) in your brain, relaxes tension in the body and may even help you live longer? In addition it can help to mend relationships after an argument and can even stop a temper tantrum in it's tracks!

We could all use a little more laughter right now...especially your kids. By bringing laughter into your home you can model resilience, adaptibility and how to keep a sense of humor when things get tough. All of these things are important coping skills that will benefit your children throughout their lives.

Here are some ways to up the humor ante in your home:

1. Learn some really good goofy jokes. Your teens may roll their eyes but they are really laughing inside. Take turns sharing jokes and see who laughs first.

2. Do something silly and unexpected- wear a goofy wig, make green eggs for breakfast, hide a plastic mouse or snake your kid's room (my family members take turns doing this), make up a silly song or dance... the choices are endless!

3. Make your hair stick up with hairspray or put something weird on the end of your nose. When your child points it out act like you have no idea what they are talking about.

4.Watch a funny movie together. Some examples: Zootopia, The Secret Lives of Pets, Curious George, Ratatouille and Monsters University. YouTube clips can be great too (be sure to screen them first).

5. Physical comedy is usually a big hit with kids...acting like you stubbed your toe and then jumping up and down exaggeratedly, etc. is one you can try.

Laughter is a social experience, chances are, when your child laughs, you will start laughing too and that is physically and emotionally healthy for the whole family.
